St James Hospital Group, a leading provider of private healthcare services in Malta, has chosen the access control solution from AppGate Network Security to provide doctors with remote access to sensitive patient information from central resources. The AppGate solution combines all the essential access control functions in one easy to use, cost-effective solution, so deployment is fast and avoids the need for integrating multiple point products.

The AppGate server acts as a gateway between the user and online information and applications, controlling all user access. Specific rules set in the security policy define which users can access specific information or applications. Essential factors that would influence what level of access is granted include location (whether the consultant is working inside the hospital, at a trusted outside location or at an unknown outside location), which type of device the doctor is using (mobile phone, hospital-owned pc or personal pc), the status of the device (whether antivirus software is loaded and up-to-date, or whether there are simultaneous sessions to other networks), plus what level of authentication the doctor has used to access the network.

“We needed a secure remote access solution that would allow our consultants to see patient information such as MRI and CRT scans when working from remote locations”, says John Spiteri, IT consultant for St James Hospital. “The AppGate security system means we don’t have to use point solutions, and it is very flexible so we can use it for many more services in the future”, Spiteri continues.

Naturally the system has to ensure the highest levels of security to protect patient records, which AppGate provides with high levels of encryption ensuring that all traffic is secured end-to-end.

“I am very happy to welcome St James Hospital among AppGate’s new customers”, says Fredrik Norén, Regional Manager Southern Europe. “The issue with handling delicate information to preserve doctor – patient confidentiality needs a robust secure access system, and we are proud that St James chose AppGate”

As always AppGate security servers build on existing proven functionality such as:

•    Application Layer Firewall
•    Mobile & Fixed VPN
•    Granular & Role based Access
•    End-point Security Control
